We administer schemes that promote renewable energy and emissions reduction for Australia.

Our schemes are an important part of the Australian Government's climate strategy. They contribute to our climate target of reducing emissions to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030 and Net Zero by 2050.

National Greenhouse Energy and Reporting (NGER) Scheme

The NGER Scheme provides a national framework for reporting and publishing information about companies' greenhouse emissions, energy production and energy consumption. Facilities and corporations that meet certain thresholds must register under the framework and report each year. This data helps inform national policy and program development.

Australian Carbon Credit Unit (ACCU) Scheme

The ACCU Scheme encourages people and businesses across a range of sectors to run projects that reduce emissions or store carbon. Participants can earn Australian carbon credit units that can then be sold on the secondary market or to the Australian Government through a carbon abatement contract.

Renewable Energy Target (RET)

The RET is designed to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases in the electricity sector. It also encourages the generation of electricity from sustainable and renewable sources by incentivising investment and installation in renewable energy systems like rooftop solar, wind farms and solar hot water systems. It is split into 2 schemes - the Large-scale Renewable Energy Target and the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme.

Safeguard Mechanism

The Safeguard Mechanism is designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from Australia’s largest facilities. It requires the facilities to keep their emissions below a set baseline.

Guarantee of Origin (GO)

The Guarantee of Origin (GO) is an assurance scheme being designed to track and verify emissions associated with hydrogen and renewable electricity made in Australia. GO will show where a product has come from, how it was made, and the carbon emitted throughout its lifecycle.
