The Australian Carbon Exchange will facilitate the trade of Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs). It will integrate with a new and improved Unit & Certificate Register, allowing for choice within the market and increasing innovation.
The project will make participating in Australia’s carbon markets both cheaper and easier. It will increase market transparency and accessibility around the trade of ACCUs and potentially other units in the future. The carbon market will play an important role in helping Australia meet its 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets in a cost-effective way.
Procurement
In December 2023, we announced that Trovio Group was contracted to develop a modern Unit & Certificate Register. This represents a key milestone in the Australian Carbon Exchange project.
The Unit & Certificate Register will consolidate the Clean Energy Regulator's current registers, progressively holding Australian carbon credit units (ACCUs), international units, and large-scale generation certificates (LGCs) and small-scale technology certificates (STCs). Over time, it will support any new future units and certificates. For example, Safeguard Mechanism credit units (SMCs) and Guarantee of Origin (GO) certificates for renewable energy, hydrogen and any other low emissions production.
Trovio Group was chosen to provide a modernised Unit & Certificate Register based on its capacity to provide a scalable and transparent solution for this project. Experienced in delivering advanced technology architecture, Trovio Group will produce a customised and user-friendly digital registry system. This will allow for a modern and secure registry platform that equips buyers and sellers with greater efficiency and choice.
We are also pleased to be working together with Australian Securities Exchange (ASX) to support the development of a carbon exchange model. The exchange will initially support the trade of ACCUs but is likely to extend to support other certificates such as LGCs in the future.
